Rational Stoicism

“My mother taught me how to deal with adversity through stoicism. Over the course of my lifetime, it certainly seems like there’s been a strange American emphasis on embracing any emotion you happen to be having at any given moment, and that there’s something psychologically wrong with you if you’re not constantly confronting your emotions in public. I don’t like that quality. I think it’s bad for society.” – Chuck Klosterman

Klosterman was one of the first authors I started reading regularly when I was younger.  His writing is simple, but thought provoking.  His Esquire columns are consistently entertaining, and I’m looking forward to reading his latest fiction piece.  Also, his unfinished novel which was published in Klosterman IV was worth the entire book purchase.

His words encourage uneasy laughter, because you realize with time how much truth there is to what he is saying.  Keep in mind, it’s quite possible I’ve confused “truth” with “personal agreement.”
