Quotes for Action, Part 5

My technique was my sword, but my ability to control my anger during confrontation was my edge.  The calmer and more confident I became, the more I fought.  The more I fought, the less I got hit.” – Curtis Jackson, From Pieces to Weight

Although I’m typically quoting philosophers, historians and classical writers, I came across this passage in one of the books I’m reading right now from Curtis Jackson

The quote is an interesting perspective on fighting, and it’s irrelevant whether Jackson was talking about a physical battle or a mental battle.  For contextual purposes, he was referring to both.  We all fight every day, either with ourselves or other people.

Writer’s block?  Argument with your girlfriend?  Having a bad day?  It’s a battle.

We all have weaknesses that we either ignore, hide or exploit.  Some result in self-loathing, others result in external controversy that could have been otherwise avoided.

The goal is control.  If you find yourself getting fired up pretty easily, or even unnecessarily during mundane conversations or issues, you’re lacking control.

Recognize your weakness, grasp it, and use it to your benefit, even if that means controlling and compressing your anger and remaining calm.  Once it is under control, it can become your edge.  It’s the edge that wins battles.
